Meet Garry

I’m Garry McCarthy and I am a father, a founder of a successful business, and a retired police officer. I care deeply about what is happening in our great city. Crime has spiraled out of control, schools are closing in the neighborhoods that need them most, and rampant tax increases are causing people to leave this city in massive numbers. We don’t have to live like this. Chicago doesn’t have to live like this.

I grew up in a home that valued honor, integrity, and service to others. My dad was a policeman and Marine Corps machine-gunner who fought in some of the toughest battles in the Pacific during World War Two. My mother was a nurse who worked overnight shifts. I owe who I am today to my parents.

I am running for Mayor to bring fundamental change to Chicago’s government by putting an end to the constant politics of bullying and bluster, and finding real solutions to the problems we face.

Chicago needs a Mayor who knows what is right and who is willing to fight up for those who are being driven out of their neighborhoods by shady backroom deals that close our schools, constantly rising taxes, and runaway crime that infects every neighborhood.

If you agree, please stand with me to change the direction of Chicago and give us a city government that is as good as the people it should serve.

More About Garry

Garry grew up in the Bronx and graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School, a Catholic high school. He earned his undergraduate degree from State University of New York Albany where he played on both the football and baseball teams.

After graduating in 1981, Garry realized his lifelong dream and became a policeman – wearing the same shield number as his father – #14573.

In 2000, he was named Deputy Commissioner for Operations of the New York City Police Department where he directed the operational command center at Ground Zero during the attacks on 9/11. In 2006, Mayor (and now Senator) Cory Booker recruited Garry to lead the entire police department of Newark, New Jersey.

Based on his history of reducing crime at every stop in his career, Garry was named as Superintendent of Police for the City of Chicago in 2011. During his tenure, crime dropped to levels not seen since the 1960’s.

Over the last months, Garry has been approached by hundreds of Chicagoans who want change brought to their city and believe that he’s the right person to be our next Mayor.  Garry is running because he believes for us to have real change, we must unite all Chicagoans around the causes of restoring transparency and fairness to government, developing a real plan to make us safe again, revitalizing our schools and stopping the school closings. That’s his mission.

Garry has 3 wonderful children and lives in Chicago with his wife Kristin and their son.
